The Minnesota Health Department says it has received the season’s first report of a child’s death from flu-related complications.

The department did not provide any information about the child or where in the state the death occurred last week. There were no flu-related deaths involving children last season, but the previous flu season hit younger people especially hard.

Overall flu activity in Minnesota continues to be rated as “regional” with marked increases in the activity reported in southeastern, and south-central Minnesota. Statewide, the department received 18 reports of flu-related hospitalizations, while the number of probable outbreaks in schools dropped to just 8 last week with students only in class for three days because of the Thanksgiving Holiday.
