Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester Public Utilities Board could make a decision Tuesday that may have a profound impact on Rochester's future.

The RPU Board is scheduled to discuss and select a scenario for meeting the city's energy needs beyond 2030. That is the year the RPU contract with the Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (SMMPA) expires.
For several decades, much of Rochester’s energy has come from a portion of the Sherco 3 coal-fired power plant owned by SMMPA in central Minnesota.

A news release from RPU says the scenarios being considered include an array of different energy mixes, including an option that calls for 100-percent renewable energy. Minneapolis, St. Paul, and St. Louis Park are among the Minnesota cities that have decided to pursue the goal of meeting energy needs through 100-percent renewable sources. The Burns and McDonnell Engineering Company was hired to develop the different scenarios for consideration by the RPU Board.

The meeting, at the RPU Services Center, is open to the public and begins at 4 PM. The presentation will also be available on the RPU website following the meeting.
