It's 2018, and you're busy as all heck...but I promise, it's still better to plan your son or daughter's graduation party now than back in 1970's Rochester. The proof is in the pictures. Until 1997, Barlow Foods was the big-deal grocery store in town. That's when HyVee bought 'em out and it became HyVee Barlow Plaza.

Barlow's had a great meat department, amazing bakery, and a staff that truly kicked all manner of butt. And, now, I learn they had a "Dilly of a Deli" too!

Let's hop in a time machine so you can order from this amazing brochure I found in a box in the basement of the station here. It's filled with food and something called "The Sandwich Loaf!"

What is a sandwich loaf? We'll get to that, but first, we must peruse the brochure. A gastronomic tour, you might say. Just look at the array of goodies your grad and family could be enjoying at their upcoming party! Grab a plate and dig in! (Click on the image for the larger version...or don't if old looking food makes you queasy.)

Mmm...imagine a nice big tray filled with seafood, creamed herring, and sardines. After a few hours in the sun, hungry relatives will have their fill and will probably never come back again. So long, Susan! You might say they'll go home GREEN with something resembling envy.

The meat tray actually looks pretty decent, and at only $20, it's a steal!

And then we come to the reason for this post. The Sandwich Loaves.

What's a sandwich loaf? Mid-Century Menu (a pretty cool site, you can get lost there for days and days) describes it like this...

Not quite a sandwich, and not quite a cake, this beauty was meant to inspire awe and wonder in your guests as you served them up perfectly “frosted” portions of supper. Or bridge snack, whichever you prefer.

We'll take it for a grad party, friend! How 'bout a closer look at that photo!
