Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Some changes are planned at the ongoing Highway 52 bridge project in south Rochester.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says a new detour is scheduled to begin Wednesday evening (July 20) at the Highway 52/Highway 63 intersection.

MNDOT says the new detour will be in place for demolition of the northbound Highway 52 bridge deck, which will begin Friday evening and be completed during the weekend. Traffic will follow marked detours during the demolition process and remain in effect after demolition. Traffic delays are possible.

The detour marks the next phase of the bridge deck replacement project, as crews move to the northbound Highway 52 bridge deck after completing the replacement of the southbound Highway 52 bridge deck.

Once demolition is completed, the closure of the northbound Highway 63 ramp to northbound Highway 52 will remain. Motorists who are northbound on Highway 63 and traveling to northbound Highway 52 toward Rochester will now be detoured to southbound Highway 52 - where they will take the next exit at Olmsted County Road 1 and then connect to northbound Highway 52 via the interchange.

Temporary traffic signals at County Road 1 will regulate traffic through the area. Motorists should plan for delays, choose alternate routes or adjust travel times, if their travel takes them through this area in south Rochester.

Motorists southbound on Highway 63 (Broadway) in Rochester who want to exit onto northbound Highway 52 will be detoured south on Highway 63 to the 40th Street exit, cross over and return on northbound Highway 63 and complete the detour by following the signs on the above-mentioned route.

Highway 52 motorists in both directions will continue in single lane traffic adjacent to each other, but will be shifted to the southbound Highway 52 lanes, while the northbound Highway 52 bridge deck is demolished and replaced.

Work on this portion of the project is scheduled to be completed Oct. 19.

Additionally, the southbound Highway 63 ramp to southbound Highway 52 will reopen.
