Hasting, MN (KROC-AM News) -  A family member has identified the man shot by a Hastings Police Officer Monday night as a former Rochester man.

According to a report by KSTP-TV, Tanya Johnson says she was notified that her son, 23-year-old Keagan Johnson-Lloyd, had been fatally shot during a confrontation with police officers, who had been looking for him as a suspect in a stabbing at the Hastings group home where he lived. The victim in the case was his roommate.

Johnson told KSTP her son had a big heart but struggled with mental illness and addiction for much of his life.

Johnson-Lloyd had an encounter with Rochester Police in March when he was arrested for allegedly attacking a 61-year-old family member with a hammer. He had also spent time in prison for a violent incident at a Twin Cities hospital in 2015 during which attacked the staff by squirting blood at them.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is in charge of the investigation into his death and has not said what prompted the Hastings Police officer to open fire after encountering Johnson-Lloyd walking along a street about two-hours after the group home attack was reported. A statement from the BCA says the two officers involved in the incident were wearing body cameras.
