The growing season in southeast Minnesota could officially end this weekend.

After enjoying some unseasonably warm temperatures earlier in September, it looks like Mother Nature is going to even things out this weekend. We'll see cooler than normal temperatures, and, the National Weather Service says there could be a widespread freeze early Saturday morning.

In fact, instead of the usual Frost Advisory, the NWS La Crosse office has issued a Freeze Warning for southeast Minnesota early Saturday morning. (It starts at 3 a.m. and runs until 8 a.m.) And, that means it could be curtains for any 'sensitive vegetation' (as they say) if you leave it outside, uncovered Friday night.

In its Freeze Warning, the NWS says, "High pressure and cool Canadian air spreading into the region will deliver cold temperatures tonight, with lows of 25 to 35 degrees expected. Those wishing to preserve sensitive vegetation should plan to cover plants or bring them inside overnight."

So, yeah, if it actually gets that cold (and should we really be using the term 'cold' already? Isn't 'cold' reserved for winter, not fall?!?) that's pretty much for the growing season. At least it also means those pesky bugs will be gone too, though!
