St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Minnesota State Patrol and several hundred local law enforcement agencies throughout the state are kicking off a two week long crackdown on seatbelt law violators today.

The enhanced enforcement campaign will run through October 30th.

While Minnesota has one of the nation’s highest seatbelt law compliance rates in the nation at 93-percent, that rate has been trending slightly lower since peaking in 2013 at just under 95-percent. Last year, 91 unbelted motorists were killed in motor vehicle crashes in Minnesota and statistics show almost 40-percent of the nearly 1400 and people killed while riding in motor vehicles over the past five years were not using seatbelts.

“Whether it’s unbuckling to reach down for something or not buckling because you are just a few blocks away from your destination, it only takes one time for tragedy to strike,” said Donna Berger, Office of Traffic Safety director. “You significantly increase your chances of surviving a crash if you buckle up every time you get in the vehicle.”

The crackdown will also focus on motorists who fail to properly restrain children in vehicles. State law requires the use of a child restraint device until they reach a height of 4 foot 9 inches or the age 8.
