Friday night, the spring sports season on KVGO started with a baseball game between the Plainview-Elgin-Millville Bulldogs and the Chatfield Gophers. Chatfield won by a score of 5-3.

In the top of the first, Spencer Mandt retired his first two batters faced on 5 pitches. Then Bulldogs catcher Joe Miller got a good pitch to hit for a single. Joe Irish walked to advance courtesy runner Loren Evers to second base. Matt Ebin then got a hit up the middle for a 1-0 Plainview-Elgin-Millville lead.

The first two innings for Chatfield were controlled by Plainview-Elgin-Millville's starting pitcher. Barron Holtz retired his first six batters faced via strikeout! The first hit for the Gophers came in the bottom of the 3rd. Nick Maki pulled a double down left field that stayed fair then bounced around enough for him to reach second. a few batters later, Jake Mandt got a hit to fall in shallow center field and Maki crossed the plate to tie the game at 1-1. Chatfield had the bases loaded, but Holtz got the big strikeout to end the inning. Through three innings of play, Holtz had struck out nine batters, and the score held at 1-1 until the 6th.

In the top half on the 6th, Joe Irish led off with a single to right. After advancing on a walk and a hit, Mason Suckow laid down the squeeze bunt to score Irish for the 2-1 Bulldogs lead. Robert Crouch, in his second inning of work, escaped any further trouble with a strikeout to end the inning.

To the bottom of the sixth we went. Crouch led off with a double down the left field line and was run for by Cole Sprau. Lincoln Salisbury traded places with him to tie the ballgame at 2-2 with his double to left. Nick Maki took a hit with him, then Austin Hines got one through the middle to drive in Salisbury and take the lead. Terron Ostby got a single through the right side to score Maki and pinch-runner Andrew Hare slid home safe for the 5-2 score. Chatfield got 5 straight hits and batted through the order.

Brady Walter hit a leadoff double for P-E-M in the top of the 7th. Reed DeFrang singled through the right side to score Walter. That was all the scoring in this one. Chatfield won it 5-3.
