Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Work on a major road project in northwest Rochester is scheduled to begin on Wednesday.

The 55th Street Northwest improvement project will have a major impact on traffic, including road closures and lane restrictions. The first stage will completely close 55th Street between 44th Avenue and 50th Avenue Northwest to allow for the reconstruction of 55th Street from 50th Avenue to West Circle Drive. The second phase will involve work from 44th Avenue Northwest to just east of the Rhino Liners business.

The overall project includes new traffic signals, pedestrian facilities, bike lanes and stormwater improvements. 55th Street also be realigning between Fairway Drive and West Circle Drive.

The target completion date for the entire project is September 1st of next year.

The Rochester Public Works Department is also reminding motorists that concrete paving on the Mayowood Road/16th Street Southwest improvement project is also scheduled to begin Wednesday.

Officials say the existing one-way westbound lane will remain open during the paving work, but concrete trucks will be periodically stopping in the travel lane and lengthy delays should be expected. They are advising motorists to completely avoid the area on Wednesday.
