Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A man whose decades long broadcasting career and community involvement turned him into a household name in the Rochester area has died. Harley Flathers passed away on Monday. He was 84 years old.

Flathers, who grew up on his family’s farm near Stewartville, began working as a radio announcer in Red Wing in 1953, and his broadcasting career included over 20 years on KROC-AM during the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

He also wrote a popular column about Rochester history for the Post Bulletin and was heavily involved in a wide variety of community events and organizations, particularly the Rochester Salvation Army.

Flathers developed polio as a young man and the infection left him with a significant disability that required the use of crutches, and later a motorized scooter.

The funeral arrangements are being handled by the Macken Funeral Home.
