Scammers are now able to disguise their number to look like a legit business number. Technology is making things easy for everyone, including scammers. According to the Minnesota Department of Health, they have been disguising their number to show the MDH number on your caller ID: 651-201-5700.

MDH did send an automated message to restaurants and other licensed food establishments this week regarding a foodborne illness outbreak involving Romaine lettuce, but that message did not ask for personal or financial information apparently requested in the spoofing calls. Nor will they.

So how do you protect yourself from these types of scams?

Keep in mind that legitimate public health calls do not ask for social security numbers, bank account or credit card numbers. When in doubt tell them you will call them.
