Thousands of fans heard the news while watching Monday Night Football December 8, 1980.  Announcer Howard Cosell made the statement during the Miami Dolphins Vs New England Patriots game "This, we have to say it, is just a football game, no matter who wins or loses.  An unspeakable tragedy, confirmed to us by ABC News in New York City.  John Lennon, outside his apartment building on the west side of New York City, the famous perhaps of all of The Beatles, shot twice in the back, rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, dead on arrival".  John Lennon was shot by Mark David Chapman.  Chapman shot Lennon in the chest, back and left arm.  Rushed to Roosevelt Hospital, Lennon was pronounced dead at 11:07 p.m.  Yoko Ono sobbed "Oh no, no, no, no.  Tell me it's not true".  After shooting Lennon, Chapman stayed at the scene of the crime, proceeded to read a book until police arrived and arrested him.  When asked why he shot John Lennon, Chapman stated "That bright light of fame, of infamy, notoriety was there.  I couldn't resist it".
