Owatonna, MN (KROC AM News) - A groundbreaking ceremony was held Monday for a new power plant in Owatonna.

The $44 million natural gas-fired facility is being built by Rochester-based Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency. It’s scheduled to be completed in two years.

The plant will produce nearly 39 megawatts of power.

Besides adding to SMMPA’s power portfolio, the plant will also help Owatonna’s public utility maintain reliability within the city. Owatonna lost its power plant to the flooding that hit southern Minnesota in 2010.

The Owatonna City Council bought the property where the plant is being built.
