Rochester Public Utilities says a major power outage hit sections of Rochester Tuesday afternoon. It affected portions of northeast and northwest Rochester, but it appears most of the affected homes and businesses were in an area west of North Broadway to Highway 52 between Elton Hills Drive and 55th Street Northwest.

At the peak of the outage, over 10,000 homes and businesses were affected. It took about a half hour to restore electrical service to all of the affected customers, which included the headquarters of Rochester Public Utilities.

The problem was traced to an equipment malfunction in a substation.
