Tuesday night on KFIL, the Lanesboro Burros girls basketball team took on the Hope Lutheran Patriots. The Burros got off to a hot start and kept it going for a 54-15 victory. Lanesboro advances to play Mabel-Canton on Thursday.

I got both coach interviews to play right before tip-off, but had to catch my breath to get back after hanging up the KFIL banner across the way (thanks to TJ Ruen for helping me out with that). Once I got back to my spot up top, the Lanesboro Burros were more than ready to play. Alyssa Gathje got the first bucket, and the Burros scored the first 17 points of the game. Lanesboro was putting on the full-court press for much of the ballgame, as there was still plenty of time to play ball. When Hope Lutheran got past midcourt and got shots down low, they were not falling. Maria Sandcork of the visiting Patriots got the first bucket and there was just one other field goal and a couple free throws on the scoreboard for Hope Lutheran in the first half. It was 28-6 at the half for Lanesboro.

Talking to Coach Rogers in the pregame, I was told Laura Ellinghuysen was the player to watch and who they wanted to shut down in the game. She was held scoreless in the first half and was guarded much of the time by Lanesboro senior Cassidy Ruud. Ruud started the second half scoring by draining one from beyond the arc, and the Burros started the second half on an 11-0 run. The whole game was a battle for the ball, with the possession arrow changing back and forth, sometimes on consecutive possessions. Leah Ruen got some good offensive boards on some scrambles and Lexie Johnson and Bailey Ruen hauled some in and played tough defense. Down in the paint, beside Gathje getting buckets, Haley Polin scored 10 last night, as the Burros went on to win 54-15. There were also two points scored in the last couple minutes by a player not listed on the regular season roster. If someone could help me out here, it was a Sophie or Sophia from what I could understand.

For the Hope Lutheran Patriots, KFIL Subway Player of the Game was Maria Sandcork. The freshman scored the first points for the visitors, and led the way with 7 points, also grabbing some good rebounds on the way.

KFIL Subway Player of the Game for the Lanesboro Burros was Cassidy Ruud. Cassidy scored 9 in the game, pushed the ball, and on defense shut down here opponent.

The Kingsley Mercantile Game Ball is Alyssa Gathje. Alyssa found position in the paint, put on a move, and scored in the paint enough you just got used to it. Eight points in each half for a total of 16 in the game. The senior also had a number of rebounds, including on the offensive glass, a rebounding battle the Burros won.
